Professional Development and Training

In line with our goal of disseminating evidence-based treatments for the community, BCSC offers several professional training opportunities:

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Training

BCSC, in collaboration with the Judge Baker Children’s Center, offers PCIT training for clinicians who are interested in applying the PCIT model at their agency. The training is for therapists who have a minimum of a Master’s degree in mental health (e.g., social work, counseling) and are licensed within their respective field. If not licensed, the therapist must be supervised by a licensed clinician. Doctoral students need to have completed three years of training and must be supervised by a licensed clinician.

The training is conducted by PCIT-International Global Trainers and involves a 5-day workshop (across two sessions), videotape review of targeted sessions, and ongoing consultation to assist with clinical, organizational, and technology-related issues to help with treatment fidelity and sustainability. This training period is up to 14 months and closely follows PCIT-International requirements, and subsequently, after completing the full training course, participants will be eligible to apply for certification through PCIT-International. As the mental health field and managed health care companies move toward higher reimbursement rates for research-supported treatments, this is an opportunity to be better prepared for these changes.

Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) Training

Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) is a trauma-informed, field-initiated modification of specific positive parenting practices. Many of practices are also used in evidence-based, therapeutic parenting programs such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). While CARE uses many of the same ideas and skills, CARE is not a therapy program, a treatment, or a structured intervention. CARE is a way for any adult to cultivate a relationship with any child and modify behavioral difficulties. CARE can be implemented in a wide range of settings and with a multitude of populations. Example sites include schools, inpatient and day-treatment settings, speech and occupational therapy centers, pediatric hospitals, child protective services, and foster care settings.

BCSC offers CARE training workshops at your preferred location or at our office and can take one of two forms listed below. The training level is varied based on the setting, client population, and agency goals.

  • 3-4 hours: Lecture, demonstrations, and practice
  • 6 hours: Lecture, demonstrations, practice, and live coaching. This can be split into (2) 3-hour sessions.

CARE train-the-trainer workshops are also available if appropriate qualifications are met. For more information, contact Dr. Joshua Masse at jmasse@bostonchildstudycenter.com
