Understanding and Treating School Refusal

Gender-Affirming Psychotherapy (GAP) Training

Transgender and nonbinary youth – defined as children, adolescents, and young adults whose gender is not aligned with their birth-assigned sex – benefit from supportive and affirming practices in psychotherapy, yet few resources exist for helping providers learn these practices. The Gender-Affirming Psychotherapy (GAP) Training is an online training that is modular and self-paced. It uses patient-, parent- and provider-testimonials and interactive practice activities to teach the key practices to better support transgender and nonbinary youth clients and their parents. The training is appropriate for learners who are beginning at an introductory level without any prior training. Additionally, more advanced learners will also benefit by building upon their existing knowledge.

At the end of the training participants will be able to:

  1. articulate when to ask for a client’s affirmed name and pronouns
  2. identify two potentially harmful questions that are commonly asked in sessions with transgender and nonbinary clients
  3. compile a list of local resources for caregivers of transgender and nonbinary youth,
  4. articulate to a client what it means to receive a gender dysphoria diagnosis
  5. make an action plan for how to help transgender and nonbinary clients develop and practice their self-advocacy skills
  6. practice creating a diagram of social support and provide examples of how to change the intake process to be more accessible

Managing Stress, Distress and Traumatic Stress in the Covid-19 Era

Registration: https://forms.gle/N7uiyrVidNcAEQvs6

The year of the “Twin Pandemics” – COVID-19 combined with the societal stress fractures of partisan strife and systemic racism — led to a 40% increase in mental health disorders nationally according to CDC estimates, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, suicidality, and trauma and stressor-related disorders. This introductory talk outlines the neuro-bio-psychological continuum of acute (but recoverable) stress sustained by the majority of us during this difficult year to depression and anxiety resulting from sustained adverse circumstances (“distress”) to the frank re-experiencing and hypervigilance that come from traumatic stress. This talk and Q & A session will explore the nuances of assessment and intervention for these three overlapping categories of stress-reaction and help participants to formulate action plans that work for their specific practices.
