Parents in Conflict Services
The relationship between the presence of high conflict in both divorced and intact parent relationships, and the subsequent development of emotional and behavioral difficulties in children has been well established. Parents in Conflict is an evidence-based treatment approach that integrates Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and other treatment models (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, narrative therapy) to empower separated, divorced, or divorcing parents in distressing conflictual situations. Parents in Conflict is also designed for parents in intact marriages or couple relationships with distressing levels of conflict related to parenting. The treatment aims to enhance the quality of life for the parent accessing the curriculum and, in turn, the life of their child or children, even in the absence of any changes made by the other parent.
The Parents in Conflict treatment model offers parents a clear personalized framework from which to navigate the challenges of parenting apart and amidst conflict in contrast to traditional court ordered divorcing parent classes. The program is also inclusive for parents in relationships with a history of intimate partner violence.
The curriculum is intended to be delivered via group sessions that do not include both parents in the same group; however, the curriculum can be applied in individual or couple’s parent coaching or therapy sessions. We recommend that parents have some familiarity with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
