Mental Health Counselor

Sophie Atwood is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at the Boston Child Study Center. She specializes in evidence-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) to treat kids, adolescents, and young adults from diverse backgrounds with difficulties in emotion regulation, mood and anxiety disorders, and co-occurring suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Sophie completed the Intensive DBT Foundation training taught by Dr. Alec Miller in September 2020.

Sophie earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from New York University. While at NYU, Sophie worked as a Graduate Student Intern at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. At the center, she provided evidence-based, culturally-informed care to adolescents experiencing behavioral, emotional and mental health needs.

She completed her pre-licensure training working for McLean Hospital’s 3East Program, as well as Boston Child Study Center. At 3East, Sophie received extensive training in DBT and worked with adolescents with OCD, depression, trauma, and anxiety. In her role, Sophie led therapeutic skills training groups and provided clinical support to residents and their caregivers. As a clinical educator, Sophie also assisted in the development and implementation of a DBT curriculum.

Sophie is passionate about providing evidence-based, compassionate care to her clients. She works towards understanding each individual’s unique story in the context of their family history and larger cultural and social context in order to reach their personalized goals.
