Vanessa Ng, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Vanessa Ng is a Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellow at Boston Child Study Center. She has trained extensively in evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), parent management training (PMT), and dialectical behavior therapy for children (DBT-C) and adolescents (DBT-A). She is a Certified PCIT Therapist by PCIT International and has received supervised clinical training in treatment adaptations for anxiety (PCIT-CALM), selective mutism (PCIT-SM), and families of toddler-aged children (PCIT-T). She is also trained in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), a caregiver-based treatment program for caregivers of children and adolescents experiencing anxiety and/or OCD.

Dr. Ng graduated with a BSc in Psychology (Applied) and a MSc in Developmental Psychopathology from Durham University, United Kingdom. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Hofstra University, New York. She completed her predoctoral externships with NYU Langone Health Child Study Center’s (NYU CSC) ADHD and Early Childhood Service and NYC Health + Hospitals Bellevue Hospital Center’s Child Inpatient Unit. Dr. Ng completed her predoctoral internship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio) with a focus in Pediatric Acute Treatment where she provided assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with significant difficulties in emotion regulation, behavioral difficulties, mood, anxiety symptoms, trauma-related symptoms, comorbid medical needs, and co-occurring suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury. At Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Ng received specialized training in brief, intensive evidence-based treatments for youth within intensive outpatient, pediatric emergency, psychiatric and medical inpatient programs.

Dr. Ng has specialized interests and experience in the treatment of children with selective mutism (SM). She has served as co-leader and trained counselors for intensive group behavioral treatment programs for SM with Camp C.H.A.T. (Hofstra University, New York) and Confident Crew (Central Health Partners Child Development Team, Hong Kong). Tied closely to her clinical interests, Dr. Ng’s doctoral dissertation centered on the evaluation of SPACE as a viable intervention option akin to intensive group behavioral treatments for families impacted by SM. She has also engaged in various intervention-based research projects at Hofstra University related to PCIT and behavioral parent training.

Dr. Ng utilizes an integrative, culturally responsive, and person-centered approach to best meet the needs of youth and their families, while working collaboratively with other supports in her clients’ lives to promote feasible and values-based change.
